INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY - WINTER

We will always put the safety of our members, guests and staff first when we make decisions concerning inclement weather. When extreme weather poses a safety threat, the Shiawassee Family YMCA may adjust or cancel scheduled hours of operation, programs/classes and/or special events. During the school year, if Owosso Public Schools closes due to inclement weather, the Shiawassee Family YMCA classes and hours of operation may be impacted.

Weather Updates
The Shiawassee Family YMCA will communicate all changes to hours/programs on our Facebook page, website and via Remind groups that are affected by those changes. We will make every effort to also share these updates on the ABC12 Schools Closings website.

If Owosso Public Schools cancels in the evening for the next day:
  • The Shiawassee Family YMCA will open at 6:00 a.m.
  • All classes and activities that begin before 12:00 p.m. will be cancelled.
  • Group fitness classes will resume after 12:00 p.m., contingent on the instructor's ability to get to the Y. Please check before coming in.
  • The YMCA leadership team will decide if afternoon and evening classes/programs will run. Please watch our website and social media for announcements.

If Owosso Public Schools cancels in the morning:
  • The Y may be open normal hours; make sure to check the website and social media for the latest updates.
  • All classes scheduled to begin after the school closing announcement is made and before noon, will be cancelled.
  • Classes may resume after 12:00 p.m., contingent on the instructor's ability to get to the Y. Please check before coming in.
  • The YMCA leadership team will decide if afternoon and evening classes/programs will run. Please watch our website and social media for announcements.

If Owosso Public Schools release early/cancel evening programs:
  • The Shiawassee Family YMCA will cancel all evening classes and activities.
  • Updates will be posted to social media and our website. We will send messages to Remind groups affected by these cancellations.

If inclement weather occurs on the weekend:
  • The YMCA leadership team will evaluate the weather conditions and make a decision on classes/programs/hours for the remainder of the day.
  • Updates will be posted to social media, our website and sent out via Remind.

If the city closes due to inclement weather:
  • The YMCA will close as well. 
  • A notice about closing will be posted to our website and social media pages. We will also make every effort to get the information on the ABC12 School Closings website.

​Tot Watch:
  • Tot Watch will be open unless stated otherwise in our closing communications.

On the rare occasion that the Y closes due to weather, we are unable to offer a refund, credit, or make up classes. We will make up program cancellations only if scheduling and space allow.

​When the weather is questionable, please call ahead.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY - OUTDOOR PROGRAMS
Soccer (fall & spring), Itty Bitty Soccer, Flag Football, Tennis, Golf
It is possible to have storms and/or large amounts of rain that affect our outdoor programming. Please read the following bullet points that provide information regarding cancellations of these programs.
  • We will hold activities in the rain whenever feasible. Light rain does not automatically cancel a program.
  • Decisions about evening activities will be made between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. by the YMCA program staff.
  • Decisions about Saturday game days will be made no later than 7:45 a.m.
  • If there are cancellations, they will be communicated to the coaches, and the coaches will reach out to their teams. We will also share this information on social media and via Remind groups affected by the change.
  • It is possible that one program will move forward but another may be cancelled. We must take every factor into consideration when making these decisions. Some issues may apply to one activity but not another. Please read all messages carefully.
  • The front desk staff will not be notified of cancellations until coaches are notified. 
  • Occasionally we may need to cancel due to field/court conditions from ongoing weather. Those decisions may be available earlier and will be shared as soon as possible.
  • Because rescheduling is not always possible, we make every effort to not cancel. Plan for your child to get wet and muddy when playing outdoor sports in Michigan in the fall and spring. Bring towels for them to sit on in the car.
  • There are no refunds or credits given due to weather cancellations. There is no guarantee that a game or practice will be made up.
  • If you are at a practice or a game and there is thunder and/or lightning, you must seek shelter for 30 minutes after the last time it is seen/heard. If the coach wishes to cancel practice at that time, they may do so. They should let Y staff know of the change.

We watch the kids while you work out!

Shiawassee Family YMCA family memberships include FREE child care while you are here!  You can work out with complete peace of mind because your kids are having fun with friends in our safe and stimulating play areas.  We offer free, age-appropriate child watch for children 6 weeks to 12 years. Child watch hours are limited. Please bring necessary items for your child.

Monday-Friday: 9:00-11:30 a.m.
Monday, Wednesday: 4:00-8:00 p.m.
    *During the summer, Tot Watch closes at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00-Noon

YMCA members: Free 
Prospective Members: $3/hour per child
